Music is the  shape of life itself, from the simplest heartbeat to a complicated syncopated rhythm. It is the sound of the dance accompanying our  busy journey. Stop a moment,  rest a while, just listen to the music.  John Bartoli

Earlier this year, our friend was diagnosed with stage-four colorectal cancer and is now undergoing treatment. He has been unable to work since March and has growing medical and living expenses not covered by his health insurance or sick leave.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, colorectal and colon cancers are currently the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths for men and women in the US, surpassed only by lung cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that on average, the lifetime risk of developing colon cancer is about one in 20. Colorectal cancer, defined as cancer that starts in the large intestine or the rectum (the end of the colon) affects more than 103,000 Americans each year, according to the American Cancer Society.

The disease knows no boundaries, class lines, color, race, or sex. It has claimed the lives of many notable celebrities: composer Claude Debussy, cartoonist Charles Schulz, singer Robin Gibb, actress/singer Eartha Kitt, actresses Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Montgomery, Pope John Paul II, and President Ronald Reagan. And yet many famous contemporaries are living with this disease, e.g., former baseball outfielder Darryl Strawberry, fashion designer Carmen Marc Valvo, TV personality Sharon Osbourne and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.  To learn more about the disease and early detection, click here.

Now our friend, David Chapman, a Fulbright scholar with degrees and performance diplomas from the Eastman and Peabody conservatories is battling this ravenous disease. David has been able to contribute substantively to the musical scene, both here in the nation’s capital and around the world, as he has performed in many important venues, including Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall (NY), Symphony Hall (Boston), and in Washington D.C. at the National Gallery, Kennedy Center Opera House and six different embassies.  He has also given vocal master classes and concerts not only in the U.S., but also on three trips to China (including the Shanghai Conservatory and Opera House) and twice to the Moscow Conservatory in Russia.  David has a large private voice studio, is a member of the adjunct faculty at the Landon School for Boys in Bethesda, MD, and is finishing his ninth year as music director and pianist at Paint Branch Unitarian Universalist Church in Adelphi, MD.

Please consider making a
donation now. Thank you for your interest and willingness to donate to David's medical fund; it is greatly appreciated!
